Little Hurls One-Hitter, Pitches Jeffs Past WPI, 1-0

April 7, 2004

AMHERST, MA - First-year pitcher Hilary Little (Kentfield, CA) tossed a one-hit shutout and picked up her second victory of the season as the Amherst College softball team downed visiting non-conference opponent Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) 1-0 on Wednesday. Amherst sophomore Laura Trigeiro (Reston, VA) went 1-for-2 with a walk and scored the lone run for the Jeffs, who improved to 10-8 with the win.

WPI first-year Meghan Kelly (Burlington, MA) stroked a single to left field in the first inning, but that was all the action the Engineer bats would see. The visitors’ only other scoring opportunity came in the top of the sixth as junior Amanda Solomon (Methuen, MA) reached on an error and stole second with only one out, but Little squashed their hopes, striking out the following batter, and forcing the next to ground out to second.

Amherst picked up its lone run in the bottom half of the sixth. Trigeiro drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Amherst leftfielder Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA) laid down her third sacrifice bunt of the afternoon, and Solomon couldn’t handle the throw at first base, allowing Trigeiro to score from second. The Jeffs proceeded to load the bases as first-year Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) hit her second single of the day and pinch hitter Kathryn Honderd (Atlanta, GA) drew a walk, but Kelly worked her way out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout.

Kelly (7-5) took the loss, allowing one unearned run on four hits and three walks in six innings, while striking out six as WPI dropped to 9-11. Little tallied four strikeouts and walked just one. Improving to 2-4 in her fifth complete game of the season.

Amherst returns to action with a non-league doubleheader Saturday at noon against visiting Bowdoin College.
