Jeffs Win NESCAC Double Dip at Wesleyan

April 3, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College softball team used a pair of pitching wins by sophomore hurler Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) to sweep a conference doubleheader at NESCAC West Division rival Wesleyan University on Saturday, winning the opener 4-2 and the nightcap 7-5. Amherst evened its league record at 2-2 and improved to 8-8 overall with the pair of wins.

Game 1 was played in a steady drizzle, and Amherst chalked up three of its four hits in the fifth inning, including a game-winning RBI single by rookie third baseman Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL). Junior catcher Greta Anderson (Newtown, PA) singled twice and drove in a run for the Jeffs. Warner struck out seven and scattered six Wesleyan hits in seven complete innings.

Game 2 saw Amherst send 11 hitters to the plate and score five unearned runs in the third inning, two of which trotted home on a single by Anderson. First-year designated hitter Amy Watson (Norwood, MA) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior center fielder Jess Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH) made a diving catch with runners on second and third in the seventh inning to secure the victory. Warner came on in relief after rookie Hilary Little faced two hitters and surrendered back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first. Warner tossed seven complete innings, improving to 7-4 with her second win of the afternoon, allowing just one earned run on nine hits.

Wesleyan dropped to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting non-league foe Mt. Holyoke College.
