Jeffs Drop Non-League Pair to Smith

March 29, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College softball team dropped a non-league doubleheader to visiting Smith College on Monday afternoon, losing the opener 1-0 in extra innings and the nightcap 7-4. The Jeffs fell to 6-8 with the pair of losses, while Smith improved to 14-2 after opening the season at 12-0.

In Game 1, Amherst overcame eight errors to take a 0-0 tie into the ninth inning, thanks in large part to a resilient pitching performance by sophomore hurler Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA), who went the distance but took the hard-luck loss to fall to 5-3. In the top of the ninth and final frame, with the leadoff runner placed on second base at the start of the inning (in accordance with the NCAA tiebreak rule), Smith junior Amanda Thompson (Tucson, AZ) bunted senior Sarah Beaudry (Springfield, MA) over to third, and Beaudry scored what turned out to be the winning run on a wild pitch. Amherst had a chance at retribution in the bottom half of the inning, but fell victim to a game-ending double play with runners on second and third and only one out.

Sophomore starter Katie Maroney (Santa Clara, CA) went the distance for Smith, allowing just three hits and striking out nine, upping her record to 6-1. Warner surrendered just four hits, no walks and struck out 12 in the loss. Senior Gina Scribner (Star, ID) paced the Jeffs with a pair of singles.

Game 2 was a seesaw affair in which Amherst jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Rookie hurler Hilary Little (Kentfield, CA) capped the three-run rally with a sacrifice fly, plating classmate Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL). Smith responded with a pair of runs in the second on a ground out by Katherine Cascio (Lawrence, MA) and an RBI single by starting pitcher Erica Hubbard (Bradford, MA), but the Jeffs battled back with another run in the fourth, as sophomore Laura Trigeiro (Reston, VA) doubled and scored on an error to put the hosts up 4-2.

Amherst made a pitching change after Smith tacked on a run with two outs in the top of the fifth, and Warner came on and fanned Beaudry on three pitches for the third out of the inning. The Jeffs then reinserted Little in the sixth after Smith put two runners on board, and the Pioneers pieced together a three-run rally to cement the doubleheader sweep. Warner again took the loss, despite pitching only 1/3 of an inning. She dropped to 5-4. Little allowed 13 hits and five runs (three earned) in 6.2 innings

Smith pounded out 14 hits in the nightcap. Junior Lorian Jenkins (Newhall, CA) led the way with three hits, including a game-winning RBI single in the sixth, while junior Nicole Caffrey (Whitehall, PA) and senior Dasen Woitkowski (Pittsfield, MA) each finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Sophomore starter Lauren Perry (Metarie, LA) pitched five innings and earned the win, improving to 4-0. Hubbard pitched the sixth and seventh in relief, securing her second save of the season.

Polales finished with two singles for Amherst.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. against visiting non-league foe WPI.
