Jeffs Drop NESCAC Twinbill to Middlebury

March 27, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College softball team fell victim to a pair of complete-game shutout pitching performances by junior hurler Megan McCarthy (Winter Springs, FL) on Saturday afternoon, dropping a NESCAC West Division doubleheader to visiting Middlebury College, 3-0 and 8-0. McCarthy tossed a one-hitter in the nightcap after surrendering just four hits in the opener, improving her pitching record to 3-2.

With the score tied 0-0 in Game 1, Amherst had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to a leadoff double by first-year Hilary Little (Kentfield, CA), a bunt single by senior captain Jess Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH) and a walk by junior Elizabeth Staunton (Milton, MA). But the Jeffs failed to capitalize as McCarthy retired the next three batters on two fly balls and a ground out.

Middlebury carried the momentum into the top half of the sixth, scoring all three of its runs on an RBI single by sophomore Victoria Glowacky (Blairstown, NJ) and a two-run single by classmate Lauren Battaglia (Framingham, MA).

McCarthy struck out eight, walked three and added two hits at the plate. Sophomore Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) went the distance for Amherst, striking out seven and allowing six hits, falling to 5-2 with the loss.

Amherst committed five errors and allowed four unearned runs in Game 2, which was called after six innings due to the NCAA eight-run rule. The Jeffs managed just one hit off McCarthy - a leadoff single by Little in the fifth - while Middlebury pounded out 10 hits, all off Little, who drew the start and went the distance, falling to 1-4 with the loss.

Middlebury senior catcher Michaela George (Ross, CA) singled twice and drove in three runs in Game 2, while Glowacky and sophomore Kathryn Hurd (Fairfield, CT) added a pair of singles apiece. McCarthy struck out four and allowed just two Amherst base runners.

Amherst fell to 6-6 overall and 0-2 in NESCAC West Division play. Middlebury improved to 6-4, 2-0 in the division.

The Jeffs return to action Monday at 3:30 p.m., with a non-league doubleheader against visiting Smith College.
