Jeffs Off to 3-1 Start with Trio of Florida Wins

March 15, 2004

FORT MYERS, FL - The Amherst College softball team jumped out to a 3-1 start in Fort Myers, Florida, with a 2-0 win over Framingham State and a 9-1 loss to St. Lawrence on Sunday, followed by a pair of shutout wins on Monday - 1-0 over Defiance and 3-0 over Lasell.

Sophomore fireballer Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) drew the start against Framingham and struck out 10 en route to a complete game two-hitter, while classmate Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA) did the damage offensively with a single, double and an RBI. Later that afternoon, St. Lawrence scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning in handing the Jeffs their first defeat of the season. Sophomore Laura Trigeiro (Reston, VA) cracked her second career homer in the loss. Rookie hurler Hilary Little (Kentfield, CA) pitched 4.2 innings in her first career start.

Monday’s wins over Defiance and Lasell were marked be a pair of outstanding pitching performances, as Warner struck out six en route to a complete-game two-hitter in the opener. Little then evened her record at 1-1 with a complete-game six-hitter in the nightcap. Rookie Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) doubled and scored the lone run on a fielder’s choice against Defiance. Trigeiro’s two-run single, plating Warner and junior Elizabeth Staunton (Milton, MA), was the difference maker against Lasell.

The Jeffs resume their Florida swing Tuesday at 9 a.m. against Salem State, followed by an 11 a.m. matchup with Roger Williams.
