Jeffs Down Franklin & Marshall, Edged by Hobart and Bates at CSA Team Championships

March 2, 2004

NEW HAVEN, CT - Playing in the Hoehn Division (for teams ranked ninth through 16th nationally) at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships, hosted by Yale University over the weekend, the Amherst College men's squash team won its first-round match over Franklin & Marshall College, 5-4, before bowing to Hobart College, 5-4, in the semifinals. The Jeffs then played Bates College in an 11-12 playoff match on Sunday, and suffered another narrow defeat, 5-4.

Junior co-captain Brian Lawrence (Concord, MA), senior Andrew Merle (Lynnfield, MA) and first-year Peter Hatfield (Barrington, RI) were the only Amherst players to win all three of their individual matches.

Williams College claimed the Hoehn Division title with a 7-2 win over Hobart in the championship match. Trinity College swept the Potter Division (for teams ranked first through eighth) with a trio of impressive shutout wins over Penn, Princeton and Harvard.

The Jeffs finished their season with a 10-9 overall record. They’ll wrap up individual match play this Friday and Saturday at the CSA Singles Championships, hosted by St. Lawrence University.
