April 17, 2004

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The 12th-ranked Amherst College men’s lacrosse team fell at NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University 9-7 on Saturday. Wesleyan sophomore Glenn Adams netted the game-winner with just 1:27 remaining, and junior goalie Matt Wheeler collected two of his game-high 12 saves in the closing seconds as the Cardinals improved to 9-2 (3-2 NESCAC). Senior co-captain Mike Allison (W. Nyack, NY) and junior Josh Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) each scored twice for Amherst, which fell to 7-3 (3-2 NESCAC). Amherst junior Alex Casertano (Millbrook, NY) dished out an assist as well, earning his 100th career point in the loss.

Wesleyan built a 5-2 first-half lead on four assists from Adams, including three straight to close the half. Adams found classmate Jordan Funt twice, and dealt to junior Chris Meade and senior Ian Applegate once each. Allison and junior Colby Griffith (Lexington, MA) accounted for the Jeffs’ pair of first-half scores off assists from Casertano and classmate Andrew Syfu (Hobart, IN), respectively.

Amherst cut into the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the hosts 3-2 as Allison, Josh Cherney and first-year Chris Hofmann (New Canaan, CT) each found the net. Amherst first-year Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) found Allison for the first score, and sophomore Kevin Boova (Summit, NJ) dished to Josh Cherney and Hofmann.

The Jeffs went on to tie the game in the final frame on consecutive goals from junior Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO) and Josh Cherney, but Adams’ score was enough to secure the upset for Wesleyan.

Amherst junior goalie Cushing Donelan (Noroton, CT) finished with five saves.
