12th-Ranked Jeffs Pound WNEC, 13-7

April 15, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The 12th-ranked Amherst College men’s lacrosse team exploded for six third-quarter goals en route to a 13-7 victory over visiting non-conference foe Western New England College (WNEC) on Thursday. Amherst junior Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO) netted two of his team-high three goals during the outburst, while classmate Alex Casertano (Millbrook, NY) and senior co-captain Mike Allison (W. Nyack, NY) each scored twice as the Jeffs improved to 7-2 overall.

Both defenses were tough early and neither team could find net until Walker broke the scoreless tie with an unassisted tally at the 7:46-mark. Amherst first-year Rob Madden (New Haven, CT) doubled the Jeffs’ lead on a transition goal just over a minute later, but the visitors responded as first-year Adam Cherry (Westfield, MA) netted an unassisted score. Amherst pushed its lead to 4-1 before the end of the opening frame on goals from Allison and Casertano. Allison fired in a long shot off a feed from junior Andrew Syfu (Hobart, IN), while Castertano capitalized on an extra-man opportunity, scoring from the left side off an assist from Allison.

WNEC rallied in the second quarter as junior CJ Annunciata (Waltham, MA) found Cherry twice to cut the lead to one, 4-3. However, the Jeffs stretched their lead back to three before the break as Casertano slipped a pass to classmate Josh Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) from behind the net for the score, and Walker fed fellow junior Colby Griffith (Lexington, MA), who sent a rocket into the net from the top of the right side.

Walker started the explosion after the half with an unassisted score, and Allison followed with his second score of the game, sprinting the length of the field and firing it home. Walker completed the hat trick at the 5:10-mark, finding the net, again unassisted, as he crossed in front of the goal. Annunciata finally answered for WNEC, finding first-year Devin Howton (Olney, MD) with his third assist of the game, but Casertano pushed the lead back to six off a feed from Allison with 2:12 left in the session. Sophomore Brett Searing (Skaneateles, NY) responded almost immediately for the Golden Bears, scoring unassisted just 12 seconds later. However, Amherst tacked on two more goals in the final minute, both unassisted, as sophomore midfielder Graham Lake (Washington, DC) and senior co-captain Alexei Kudla (Bethesda, MD) each netted their third goal of the season.

Junior Bryan Hiller (Wantagh, NY) capped the Jeffs’ scoring in the final quarter, slinging a shot in from his knees off a pass from Casertano with just one second remaining on an extra-man opportunity. WNEC battled until the final horn, scoring twice in the last minute. The first was Cherry’s game-high fourth score, and the second came from senior co-captain Marco Le Gette (Severna Park, MD).

First-year Matt Pendelbury (N. Hunterdon, NJ) posted 13 saves in goal for WNEC, which fell to 8-5 with the loss. Amherst junior goalie Cushing Donelan (Noroton, CT) collected six saves before giving way to sophomore Raul Altreche (Bronx, NY), who came on to earn a pair of stops in the final minutes.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University.
