Hamill, Garrahan Lead Women to Sixth-Place Showing at NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

May 29, 2004

DECATUR, IL - Amherst College junior Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA/Collegiate School) and first-year Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA/Thomas Jefferson) finished second and third, respectively, in the 5,000-meter final at the NCAA Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Millikin University on Saturday, leading the Jeffs to a sixth-place tie with Carthage College in the final team standings.

Hamill, who claimed her third career NCAA individual title with a win at 10,000 meters on Thursday, finished at 17:02.17, trailing Wartburg College junior Missy Buttry's scorching time of 15:57.86. Hamill's and Buttry's 5,000-meter times were the fastest ever recorded at Millikin's Lindsay Stadium.

Garrahan finished right behind Hamill at 17:11.22, after taking second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday. Garrahan's steeplechase time of 10:29.64 was less than four seconds off the winning time of 10:26.56, registered by Wisconsin La Crosse junior Julie Rudd. Garrahan's and Rudd's steeplechase times were the fastest in NCAA Division III this season and the fastest ever at an NCAA Division III Championship Meet.

Amherst senior co-captain Aly Venti (Newton, MA/Newton South) also ran in Saturday's 5,000-meter final, finishing 13th at 19:35.13.
