Amherst Women 19th, Men 23rd at New England Open Championships

DEDHAM, MA - Stellar performances, including four NCAA qualifying marks and a school record, led the Amherst College womenís and menís outdoor track and field teams to 19th- and 23rd-place finishes at the New England Open Championships, hosted by Northeastern University on Friday and Saturday. Boston College captured the womenís team championship, while the University of Rhode Island claimed the menís title.

For the women, two-time 5k indoor national champion Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) took home second place in the 5,000-meter run; her time (16:50.76) qualified her automatically for the NCAA championships. First-year All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) set her fourth school record in as many meets, placing fourth in the 1,500-meter run. Senior Alyson Venti (Newton, MA) finished 15th in the 5k, sophomore All-America Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) placed 19th in the 800-meter run, and the 4x400-meter relay squad of Garrahan, Polich, sophomore All-America Ariel Haney (Fairport, NY), and fellow classmate Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) nabbed 11th.

On the menís side, junior All-America Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) sped to a second-place finish in the 800-meter run; his time (1:52.49) qualified him provisionally for nationals. Fellow junior All-America Dave Molina (Cleveland, OH) earned a provisional qualifier in the 1,500-meter run as well with a time of 3:54.27 and a seventh-place finish. Senior All-America Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) placed 14th and 18th in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash, respectively, while the 4x800 squad of Molina, Morgan, first-year John Babbott (Ojai, CA) and senior Andrew Schneider (Saratoga Springs, NY) placed eighth.

Both squads return to action this Friday and Saturday at the ECAC Championships, held at Williams College.
