Amherst Women Third, Men 12th at Division III New England Championships

SPRINGFIELD, MA & WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - With four first-place finishes and two second-place finishes, including a new school record, the Amherst women amassed 80 points and took home a best-ever third-place finish at the Womenís Division III New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Springfield College on Friday and Saturday. The men, again led by junior All-America Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV), who finished second in the 800-meter dash, placed 12th at the Menís Division III New England Championships, hosted by Williams College. For the second straight week, Williams captured both team championships.

Junior All-America and two-time 5k indoor national champion Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA), sophomore All-America Ariel Haney (Fairport, NY), first-year All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA), and sophomore Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA) grabbed first-place finishes in the 5,000-meter run, 400-meter dash, 3,000-meter steeplechase, and 10,000-meter run, respectively. Hamill also earned second in the 1,500-meter run, while Garrahan placed third in the 800-meter run; her time of 2:16.38 set a new school record. Sophomore Kristine Morin (Litchfield, NH) and junior Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) placed second and fourth, respectively, in the heptathlon, while senior Aly Venti (Newton, MA) nabbed a third-place finish in the 5k and a ninth-place finish in the 1,500. Senior Erinn White (Watertown, NY) placed seventh in the 5k, sophomore All-America Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) took ninth place in the 800-meter run, junior Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) finished 12th in the 3k steeplechase and sophomore Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) placed 14th in the 400-meter dash. Haney, Polich, Rucker, and sophomore All-America Lyndsey Scott (West Orange, NJ) teamed to place fourth in the 4x400-meter relay.

For the men, senior All-America Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) captured third in the 200-meter dash, while junior All-America David Molina (Cleveland, OH) finished third in the 1,500-meter run and sophomore David Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run. Chandrasoma, junior Jay Wagstaff (Tewskbury, MA), and first-years Jon Ettinger (Chevy Chase, MD) and Geoff Stricsek (Harrison City, PA) teamed to place fifth in the 4x100-meter relay, while the 4x400-meter relay squad of Chandrasoma, Molina, Morgan, and Wagstaff finished eighth.

Amherst returns to action this weekend at the New England Open Championships, held at Northeastern University.
