Men Fifth, Women Seventh at Season-Opening Conn. College Outdoor Track Invitational

NEW LONDON, CT - In what was the first meet of the Amherst track and field teamís spring season, the men, led by several second-place finishes in the sprinting and jumping events, placed fifth, while the women, led by junior Lee-Jay Henryís (Springfield, MA) first and second-place finishes in the triple jump and long jump, finished seventh overall at the Connecticut College Invitational, held in New London, CT this past Saturday.

Both squads were without several of their top runners, still recovering from the indoor seasons after having only recently capped their winter campaigns at the NCAA Div. III Indoor National Championship Meet.

For the men, junior Jay Wagstaff (Tewksbury, MA) grabbed second place in the 100-meter dash, while senior indoor All-America Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) finished second in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 400-meter dash. First-year Jon Ettinger (Chevy Chase, MD) captured second place in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump, while senior John Stanton-Geddes (Glendale, MO) placed third in the 1,500-meter run and classmate Andrew Schneider (Saratoga Springs, NY) took home sixth place in the 800-meter run.

Sophomores Tim Porter (Newton, MA) and Nick Canevari (Warwick, NJ) captured fifth place in the 400-meter hurdles and the discus event, respectively, while first-year Mark Hannon (Glen Rock, NJ) nabbed sixth in the 100-meter dash. Fellow rookie Ryan Smith (Muskego, WI) finished sixth in the shot put event, and Canevari also placed sixth in the javelin event.

The 4x100-meter relay squad of Chandrasoma, Ettinger, Wagstaff, and Hannon placed third, while Stanton-Geddes, Schneider, and first-years John Babbot (Ojai, CA) and Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) also finished third in the 4x400-meter relay.

For the women, sophomore Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA) grabbed second place and junior Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run. Sophomore Lyndsey Scott (West Orange, NJ) captured third and fifth place finishes in the 200-meter dash and the long jump, respectively, while sophomore Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) finished sixth in the 400-meter dash. Morin, Rodriguez, sophomore Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) and junior Marcie Griffith (Natick, MA) took home fifth place in the 4x400-meter relay.

Coast Guard captured the team victory on the menís side, while Smith College grabbed the team championship in the womenís meet.

The Amherst menís and womenís squads return to action this Saturday at the Bantam Invite, hosted by Trinity College.
