March 13, 2004

WHITEWATER, WI - Amherst College junior Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) posted an All-American performance for the third consecutive year and collected her second national championship by winning the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Div. III Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday and Saturday. She set a new site record with a time of 16:46.63, besting her competition by more than 30 seconds. Amherst senior Aly Venti (Newton, MA) competed in the 5,000 as well, finishing 12th with a time of 18:21.22. Hamill also led the womenís distance medley relay team to a second-place finish, while the menís distance medley relay team nabbed sixth place.

Hamillís 5,000-meter time was the best time posted this year in Div. III. She earned her first national championship in the 5,000 her rookie season, before finishing in sixth place as a sophomore. She, first-year Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA), and sophomores Ariel Haney (Fairport, NY) and Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) teamed for a time of 11:52.48 in the distance medley relay, eclipsing the old site record, but falling just short of the team from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which set the site record with a time of 11:44.56.

Amherst senior tri-captain Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) led juniors David Molina (Cleveland, OH), Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) and Mike Page (Fargo, ND) to a time of 10:07.52 in the distance medley relay. Their time was good for sixth place, just edging the squad from University of Chicago by five hundredths of a second.
