Amherst Men's and Women's Indoor Track Teams Place Seventh, 13th at ECAC Championships

March 8, 2004

BRUNSWICK, ME - In the final meet before the upcoming NCAA Championships, the Amherst College menís and womenís indoor track teams placed seventh and 13th, respectively, at the ECAC Championships, hosted by Bowdoin College on Friday and Saturday. The womenís team continued to rewrite the Amherst record book as junior All-America Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) and first-year phenom Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) broke school records for the second consecutive meet.

On Friday evening, the womenís distance medley relay squad of Hamill, Garrahan, and sophomores Ariel Haney (Fairport, NY) and Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) set a new school record (11:57.20) and qualified automatically for the NCAA Championship meet with their first-place finish. On the menís side, senior Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) and juniors Dave Molina (Cleveland, OH), Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) and Mike Page (Fargo, ND) also teamed to finish first in the distance medley relay.

On Saturday, Garrahan broke a school record in the 1,000-meter run, as she crossed the line first in a blistering 2:54.78 - also a new meet record. Hamill added to her collection of school records as well with a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run; her time (4:39.12) also qualified her provisionally for nationals.

Other top performances included Molinaís third-place finish in the 1,000-meter run and John Stanton-Geddesís (Glendale, MO) fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run. Page captured fifth place in the 1,500-meter run, while sophomore David Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) finished fifth in the 3,000-meter run. Stanton-Geddes, senior Andrew Schneider (Saratoga Springs, NY), Molina, and first-year John Babbott (Ojai, CA) teamed to take home fifth place in the 4x800-meter relay.

Both squads will wrap up the indoor season Friday and Saturday at the NCAA Championship Meet, hosted by Wisconsin-Whitewater.
