Jeffs Race Past Competition at Valentine Classic, Fast Track Invitational, Tufts Stampede

MEDFORD, MA & BOSTON, MA - On a weekend in which their athletes were spread among three meets - the Boston University Valentine Classic, the Tufts Stampede, and the Boston University Fast Track Invitational - the Amherst College menís and womenís track and field squads posted two individual school records, saw an athlete earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship meet, and enjoyed a number of additional successful individual and relay performances.

On Friday evening, junior Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA), competing against both elite and Division I athletes at the Valentine Classic, held at Boston University, set yet another school record with her third-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. First-year Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) followed closely behind, finishing seventh. In the 5,000-meter run, senior Aly Venti (Newton, MA) placed ninth, qualifying for the NCAA Championship meet with a time of 16:59.56.

The following day, the majority of the menís and womenís teams competed at the Tufts Stampede, held at Tufts University. Sophomore Lyndsey Scott (West Orange, NJ) led the womenís team, capturing victory in the high jump, third in the triple jump, and sixth in the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Ariel Haney (Fairport, NY) placed fourth in the high jump and third in the 400-meter dash, while junior Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run. Scott and Haney teamed up with classmate Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) and junior Monica Westin (Lexington, KY) to capture first place in the 4x400-meter relay.

Sophomore David Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) and John Babbott (Ojai, CA) led the men with their fourth-place finishes in the 3,000-meter run and the 800-meter run, respectively. Amherstís 4x400 relay squad of Babbott, fellow rookies Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and Jon Ettinger (Chevy Chase, MD) and sophomore Tim Porter (Newton, MA) captured third place.

Saturday evening, several members of the menís team competed at the Boston University Fast Track Invitational, held at Boston University. Senior Andrew Schneider (Saratoga Springs, NY), competing against both elite and Division I athletes, including his head coach, Erik Nedeau, finished 21st in the 1,000-meter run; Nedeau won the event with a time of 2:27.57. Juniors Dave Molina (Cleveland, OH) and Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) finished 27th and 29th, respectively, in the 800-meter dash, while senior John Stanton-Geddes (Glendale, MO) finished 26th in the one-mile run, and junior Mike Page (Fargo, ND) finished 31st in the 5,000-meter run. Senior Janak Chandrosoma (Pasadena, CA) placed 51st in the 400-meter dash.

Both the menís and womenís squads return to action this weekend at the Division III New England Championships. The men will travel to Bowdoin College, while the women will compete at MIT.
