MEDFORD, MA - Strong individual performances propelled the Amherst College menís and womenís indoor track and field teams to seventh and fifth place, respectively, on Saturday at the Tufts Invitational III, held at the Gantcher Family Sports & Convocation Center at Tufts University. First-year Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) led the women with a second-place finish in the 1500-meter run. Her time of 4:40.21 set a new school record and qualified her provisionally for the NCAA Championship meet.

Junior Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) captured first place in the womenís 3,000-meter run, and followed that performance with a fourth-place finish in the 1500-meter run. Amherstís 4x800-meter relay team of junior Monica Westin (Lexington, KY), senior Helen Dole (Shelburne Falls, MA), senior Aly Venti (Newton, MA), and Garrahan also placed first, winning the event by more than 15 seconds.

Senior Erinn White (Watertown, NY) placed sixth in the 3,000-meter run, while Venti finished second in the 1500-meter run. Dole earned second in the 1,000-meter run, while Westin finished eighth in the 600-meter run. Sophomores Lyndsey Scott (West Orange, NJ) and Ariel Haney (Fairport, NY) claimed third and fourth, respectively, in the 400-meter dash, and they teamed up with classmate Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) and junior Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) to place seventh in the 4x400-meter relay.

On the menís side, junior David Molina (Cleveland, OH) finished second in the 1,000-meter run, and first-year John Babbott (Ojai, CA) followed closely behind in eighth place. Sophomore David Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) earned second in the 5,000-meter run, while senior Andrew Schneider (Saratoga Springs, NY) placed fourth in the 800-meter run and junior Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) claimed third in the 600-meter run. Amherstís 4x400-meter relay team, comprised of junior Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO), first-year Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL), senior Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA), and Morgan placed sixth.

Both the menís and womenís squads from Tufts University won the team championship, finishing with 155 and 150 points, respectively.

Amherst will travel to both Tufts University and Boston University next weekend, with several of the womenís runners competing at BUís Valentine Classic on Friday, and a portion of the menís team competing at BUís Fast Track Invitational on Saturday. The majority of both teams will compete at the Tufts Stampede, hosted by Tufts, on Saturday.
