Greco Nets Four Goals, Leads Jeffs to 9-3 Blitz of Conn. College

February 14, 2004

AMHERST, MA - Sophomore A.J. Greco (Williamsville, NY) netted four goals in the first two periods as the Amherst College men’s hockey team upended visiting NESCAC foe Connecticut College 9-3 on Saturday. Amherst senior Chris Norqual (Eden Prairie, MN) dished out four assists, while junior co-captain Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) dealt three assists and sophomore Steve Nelson (Wayzata, MN) had a goal and two assists as the Jeffs improved to 11-9-2 overall and 6-9-1 in conference play.

Greco opened the scoring on Amherst’s first shot of the game, flipping in a backhanded shot as he fell near the left face-off circle. He then doubled the Jeffs’ lead at the 13:55-mark as Kretzman sent him a long cross-ice pass and he beat Conn. junior goalie Steve Oven one-on-one with another backhand. Amherst’s advantage climbed to 3-0 as sophomore Jack Greeley (Scituate, MA) won a face-off inside the Jeffs’ zone and classmate Scott Aldrich (Wilmington, MA) fired a wrister into the net. The Camels finally responded with just under two minutes left in the period as sophomore forward Tim Finkle deflected a shot off an Amherst skate and into the net.

The Amherst attack didn’t let up in the second frame as Greco completed the hat trick and tallied his fourth score with a pair of power-play goals in the first five minutes. The first came off a rebounded shot from first-year defender Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO), and the second came on a nifty move in front of the net as the Jeffs pulled ahead 5-1. Conn. responded with a power-play goal of its own as sophomore defender Bryan Lane fired a slap shot from the point and junior Dave Moccia tipped it in for the score. Amherst would tack on two more scores before the end of the period as Nelson slid through the crease at the 14:02-mark and went top-shelf over Camel junior goalie Matt Gluck, and first-year Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) punched in a goal off an Aldrich assist with just over three minutes left in the session to give the Jeffs a 7-2 edge.

After nearly 12 minutes of scoreless hockey in the final period, Amherst junior Billy Jenkins (Edina, MN) ripped a slap shot from the blue line for the goal. Conn. fought back and picked up another score as first-year Jake Henry picked up a rebounded shot from sophomore Chas McLaughlin and stuffed it home. Amherst senior Josh Hoffman (Rydal, PA) capped the scoring, putting back a rebound from junior Brad Craigen (Kitchener, Ontario).

Amherst first-year Dan Smith (Rochester, MN) and sophomore Sean Lynch (Essex Junction, VT) split time in net, collecting 12 and 10 saves, respectively. Oven and Gluck posted 11 and 23 saves, respectively, for Conn., which fell to 6-15-1 overall and 2-13-1 in conference play.

The Jeffs wrap up regular season play next weekend as they face Colby College on Friday (7 p.m.) and Bowdoin College on Saturday (3 p.m.).
