Jeffs Plan Promotions, Giveaways for Tufts Game

February 12, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College Social Council has planned a series of special promotions and giveaways for Friday night’s Amherst men’s hockey game against visiting NESCAC rival Tufts University (7:30 p.m., Orr Rink). Admission and popcorn are free, and every fan in attendance will receive a complementary raffle ticket for chances to win up to $2000 in prizes. Additional raffle tickets will be sold at the game as well.

Drawings will be held at each intermission. Prizes include Sanyo flat screen TV’s, Emerson DVD players, Kodak digital cameras, Microsoft Xbox video game systems, $20 movie passes and $75 gift certificates to Carmelina’s at the Commons and La Cucina di Pinocchio of Amherst. One-hundered lucky fans will also be randomly selected to win a $5 gift certificate to Antonio’s Pizza in downtown Amherst.

“It should be a terrific night,” says Amherst head coach Jack Arena ’83. “It’s always great to get the students excited and appreciate what their classmates are doing on the athletic fields.”

If attendance reaches 500, an anonymous donor will cover the cost for this year’s Senior Class Canes, which are awarded annually to each Amherst graduate at the college’s Commencement exercises. The dark reddish-brown chestnut canes are an Amherst tradition dating back to the 19th century, revived last spring after a long hiatus.

The Amherst men’s hockey team stands at 9-9-2 overall, 4-9-1 in conference play, good for eighth place in the NESCAC standings. Tufts comes to Orr Rink in ninth place at 6-11-1 overall, 3-10-1 NESCAC in NESCAC play. The top eight teams in the conference standings qualify for the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, which kicks off on Saturday, February 28.
