10th-Ranked Jeffs Improve to 7-0 with 79-58 Win Over Worcester St.

December 9, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Andrew Schiel (Wayne, PA) tallied 19 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Adam Harper (Washington, DC) added 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the 10th-ranked Amherst College menís basketball team to a 79-58 win over visiting Worcester State College on Tuesday night.

Senior sharpshooter John Donovan (Holmdel, NJ) banged home a pair of three-pointers and joined Schiel and Harper in double figures with 10 points. Junior guard Ray Corrigan (Queens, NY) dished out a game-high six assists, and senior forward Tim Jones (Richmond, VA) posted a game-high four blocks to go along with six boards and four assists.

The win was Amherstís final game until a December 30th matchup with Johnson & Wales at the Miami Country Day School in Miami, Fla.

Worcester St. (2-4) used pesky man-to-man defense to hang tough through the first 9:35, trailing by only three points, 16-13, with 10:25 left in the first half. Amherst remedied the situation with a backbreaking 13-2 run over the next 3:53, jumpstarted by a Harper trifecta and capped by a breakaway layup by Schiel, who ignited his own fast-break bucket with the first of three blocks on the evening.

Worcester St. managed to cut the lead to 10 on several occasions but never came within single digits, trailing by as many as 26 points in the second half. Amherst emptied its bench in the waning minutes, placing 10 players in the scoring column. Sophomore swingman John Casnocha (San Francisco, CA), always a key contributor, paced the reserves with eight points.

Sophomore guard Matt Savage (Worcester, MA) led Worcester St. with 18 points in defeat. Fellow sophomore Jason Garrett (Newark, NJ) added 17.
