Schiel Named NESCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week

December 9, 2003

AMHERST, MA - After leading the 10th-ranked Lord Jeffs to a trio of road wins over Clark University, Western New England College (WNEC) and Springfield College, Amherst College junior Andrew Schiel (Wayne, PA/Conestoga) was named the Men’s Basketball Player of the Week by the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).

On the week, Schiel, a 6’ 7”, 240-pound forward, averaged 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 blocks and shot a blistering 9-for-15 from three-point range as the undefeated Jeffs upped their record to a perfect 6-0. He torched 21st-ranked Clark for 17 points, seven boards, a career-high six blocks and three assists in an 81-66 Amherst win and followed that up with a 19-point, five-rebound outburst in a 90-53 win over WNEC and a season-high 23-point performance in an 80-70 win at Springfield.

Schiel leads the NESCAC in blocked shots with 19 (3.17 bpg) and is tied for third in free throw percentage (.857). He’s also fifth in the conference in field goal percentage (.613), tied for eighth in three-point percentage (.500) and is ninth in scoring (16.5 ppg).

As a sophomore, Schiel finished seventh in the NESCAC in three-point FG% (.429), eighth in blocked shots (1.18 bpg), 11th in free throw percentage (.772) and 22nd in scoring (12.4 ppg), helping lead Amherst to a 24-5 overall record and its first trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals since 1994. He averaged 8.2 points in 29 games as a rookie as the Jeffs claimed their second straight NESCAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA “Sweet 16”.
