SPRINGFIELD, MA - Amherst College senior guard Adam Harper (Washington, DC) poured in a game-high 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting in just 21 minutes to lead the 10th-ranked Lord Jeffs to a 90-53 win over Western New England College in the first round of the Pioneer Valley Menís Basketball Classic, hosted by Springfield College on Friday night. In other first-round action, host Springfield downed Westfield St. 80-69 behind 14 points from junior guard Ryan Wilde.

Harper led the Lord Jeffs (5-0) to a sizzling night from the field. Amherst shot 55.6% from the floor (30-54) and 55.6% from three-point range (10-18). Junior center Andrew Schiel (Wayne, PA) added 19 points, five rebounds and three blocks, and junior point guard Ray Corrigan (Queens, NY) dished out 10 assists.

Freshman center Malik Champlain (Norwich, CT) had a solid night off the bench for the Golden Bears (1-3), contributing eight points and six rebounds. Senior guard Gerry Toney (West Hartford, CT) led WNEC with nine points.

Amherst resumes tournament play Saturday at 3 p.m., taking on host Springfield. Westfield State will play Western New England at 1 p.m.
