Donovan, Bedford Lead Seventh-Ranked Jeffs Past Salve Regina, 81-40

January 5, 2004

NEWPORT, RI - Senior sharpshooter John Donovan (Holmdel, NJ) poured in 16 points on the strength of a perfect 4-for-4 showing from beyond the three-point arc, while sophomore guard John Bedford (Ridgewood, NJ) added a career-high 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting, to lead the seventh-ranked Amherst men's basketball team to an 81-40 non-league rout at Salve Regina (1-6) on Monday. The Jeffs improved to 9-0 heading into Saturday's showdown with top-ranked defending national champion Williams.

Amherst opened the game with a 22-10 burst before the host Seahawks used a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to just five points, highlighted by a three-pointer by sophomore Matt Smolensky (New York, NY). Donovan followed a pair of Salve Regina turnovers with a three-pointer to boost the lead to eight. Amherst junior Ray Corrigan (Queens, NY) followed suit with a layup, and the Jeffs led by double digits the rest of the way.

Corrigan finished with 10 points, while Amherst senior guard Adam Harper (Washington, DC) added seven points, eight rebounds and five steals.

Amherst shot better from three-point land (54.5%) than Salve Regina fared at the free-throw line (51.7%). The Seahawks committed 29 turnovers, thanks in part to 20 steals for the Lord Jeffs.

It could be a battle of the undefeateds when Amherst hosts Williams on Saturday (8 p.m. at Amherst College LeFrak Gymnasium). Williams (10-0) travels to Wesleyan on Wednesday before its showdown with the Lord Jeffs.
