Jeffs Eliminated from Regional Play with 12-10 Loss to Endicott
May 21 - The Amherst baseball team clawed back from an early 7-0 deficit and had the tying and winning runs on board in the bottom of the eighth inning but saw its season come to a screeching halt with a 12-10 loss to Endicott College in an NCAA Regional elimination game Friday afternoon at Eastern Connecticut State University. The Jeffs finish their season at 19-18 after making their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance. Full Story

Jeffs Drop NCAA Regional Opener at Eastern Connecticut
May 20 - The Amherst baseball team got a valiant pitching effort from senior co-captain Duncan Webb and a pair of solo home runs from sophomore Rob Anderson and senior Brandon Cody but came up just short in a 5-2 loss at four-time Division III National Champion Eastern Connecticut State University in the first round of NCAA Regional play on Thursday. In the double elimination format, the Jeffs now move on to the losers' bracket, where they'll play the loser of Thursday's second regional matchup between Western New England and Endicott, Friday at noon. Donahue Named Second-Team NEIBA All-New England
May 18 - Amherst first-year hurler Brian Donahue was named Second-Team All-New England by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) on Tuesday. Already named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-NESCAC, Donahue helped lead the Jeffs (19-16) to their first-ever NESCAC Championship and an automatic bid to their fourth NCAA Tournament, with a team-best 6-1 record, 45 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.64. Jeffs Headed to Eastern Connecticut for NCAA Regionals
May 17 - After winning its first-ever NESCAC Championship, the Amherst baseball team earned an automatic bid to its fourth NCAA Tournament and will open regional play Thursday at noon at fourth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University (35-9). The 42-team field is divided into eight double-elimination regionals, with winners advancing to the championship round, held May 28, to June 1, at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin. Donahue Named NESCAC Rookie of the Year, First-Team All-NESCAC
May 14 - Amherst first-year hurler Brian Donahue was named the NESCAC Baseball Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-NESCAC on Friday. Donahue, who helped lead the Jeffs (19-16) to their first-ever NESCAC Championship and an automatic bid to their fourth NCAA Tournament, boasts a team-best 6-1 record with 45 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.64. Whiting Named First-Team Academic All-District, Finalist for Academic All-America
May 13 - Amherst senior centerfielder Paul Whiting was the only player from the NESCAC named to the 2004 College Division Academic All-District 1 Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. As a first-team selection, Whiting - who was also a First-Team Academic All-America pick in football - will be automatically placed on the national ballot for Baseball Academic All-America consideration. Mazzone Named NESCAC Player of the Week
May 11 - Amherst rookie infielder Mark Mazzone was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Baseball Player of the Week for the period ending May 9. Mazzone came through with a game-winning RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday, giving the Jeffs (19-16) a dramatic 5-4 win over archrival Williams College in the final game of the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament. Jeffs Win NESCAC Championship Behind Mazzone's Game-Winning RBI Single
May 9 - Amherst rookie designated hitter Mark Mazzone plated senior Paul Whiting with a game-winning RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday, giving the Jeffs a dramatic 5-4 win over archrival Williams College in the final game of the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, hosted by Trinity College. The victory afforded Amherst its first-ever conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, with regional play set to begin on Thursday, May 20, at an on-campus site yet to be determined. Powers, Sullivan Homer Jeffs into NESCAC Title Game
May 8 - Behind a three-run home run by junior Dave Powers, a solo shot by senior co-captain Tom Sullivan and a complete-game pitching performance by rookie hurler Brian Donahue, the Amherst baseball team advanced to the NESCAC Tournament championship game for the second straight season with a 4-1 win over Bowdoin College Saturday afternoon at Trinity College. Jeffs Shock Tenth-Ranked Trinity in NESCAC Championship Tournament
May 7 - Sophomore shortstop Zach Schonberger went 4-for-6 with five RBIs, including a grand slam in the top of the first inning, to lead visiting Amherst to a 16-8 victory over 10th-ranked Trinity College in the first round of the NESCAC Baseball Championship Tournament on Friday. Bowdoin College joined Amherst in the winners' bracket with a 6-3 win over Williams, played at Wesleyan University. Full Story

Jeffs Close Regular Season with 6-4 Loss to Springfield
May 4 - The Amherst baseball team pounded out 11 hits but left nine runners on base in a 6-4 loss to visiting non-league foe Springfield College on Tuesday. The Jeffs close the regular season at 16-16 and open NESCAC Tournament play this Friday at 3 p.m. at defending conference champion Trinity College. Full Story

Green Named NESCAC Player of the Week
May 4 - Amherst sophomore outfielder Andrew Green was named the NESCAC Baseball Player of the Week for the period ending May 2nd. Green batted .625 (10-for-16) with a team-high six RBIs after being inserted into the starting lineup for the first time on Friday, as the Jeffs clinched a spot in the four-team NESCAC Posteason Championship Tournament. Green, Levinson Power Amherst Bats in Doubleheader Sweep at Bates
May 2 - Sophomore Andrew Green had four hits and drove in a trio of runs in the opener, while classmate Dave Levinson went 5-for-7 on the day, including a 4-for-4 outing in the finale, as the Amherst baseball team swept a non-league doubleheader at Bates College on Sunday, winning 6-2 and 8-0. The Jeffs have already clinched a berth in the four-team NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, where theyíll face top-seeded host and defending conference champion Trinity College this Friday at 3 p.m. Full Story

Jeffs Clinch Playoff Berth with Doubleheader Split at Middlebury
May 1 - Thanks to a complete-game three-hit shutout by senior hurler Andy Kerns in the opener, the Amherst baseball team clinched a spot in the four-team NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament with a doubleheader split at West Division rival Middlebury College on Saturday. Amherst won the opener 1-0 before dropping the finale 9-5. The Jeffs managed just two hits off Middlebury in Game 1 but made the most of its lone scoring opportunity - a first-and-third double-steal in the second inning that saw rookie Mark Mazzone scamper home with the winning run. April 30 - The Amherst baseball team used a six-run seventh inning and an outstanding pitching performance by rookie hurler Brian Donahue to post a crucial 9-2 win at NESCAC West Division foe Middlebury College on Friday. The Jeffs (13-14/5-5 NESCAC West) can clinch a spot in the four-team NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament with a doubleheader split at Middlebury (11-14/4-6 NESCAC West) on Saturday. Full Story

Jeffs Victimized by Obstruction Call at Brandeis
April 28 - The Amherst baseball team fell 4-3 at non-league foe Brandeis University on Wednesday, thanks in part to an obstruction call on a botched squeeze bunt attempt in bottom of the ninth inning. Amherst sophomore Zach Schonberger drilled his third round-tripper in the last two days in the loss. Full Story

Schonberger, Santry Key 12-Run Sixth Inning as Jeffs Clobber Keene St., 18-4
April 27 - The Amherst baseball team erupted for 12 runs in the top of the sixth inning en route to a one-sided 18-4 win at non-league foe Keene State College on Tuesday. The Jeffs pounded out 15 hits in the rout, including a pair of home runs by sophomore Zach Schonberger and a three-run shot by junior Josh Santry, unleashing their most prolific offensive output since a 21-0 victory at Hamilton College last season. Jeffs Sidestep Three-Game Sweep with 6-4 Win at Williams
April 25 - After dropping a key NESCAC West Division doubleheader to the visiting Ephs on Saturday, the Amherst baseball team avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of its archrivals with a 6-4 victory at Williams on Sunday. Tied for second place in the conference standings at 11-13 overall and 4-5 in league play, the Jeffs control their own destiny in the hunt for a berth in the four-team NESCAC Tournament, pending the outcome of next weekendís three-game set against division rival Middlebury. Jeffs Drop Key Conference Twinbill to Visiting Williams
April 24 - The Amherst baseball team dropped a key NESCAC West Division doubleheader to visiting Williams College on Saturday, losing the first game 5-4 and the second 5-2. Williams improved to 26-6 overall and 10-1 in divisional play, while Amherst dropped to 10-13 and 3-5. The Jeffs and Ephs will conclude their three-game set tomorrow (Sunday) at noon at Williams. Jeffs Bow at 12th-Ranked Trinity
April 20 - In a rematch of last year's NESCAC Tournament title game, the Amherst baseball team dropped a 10-5 non-league decision at 12th-ranked Trinity College (23-4) on Tuesday. The visiting Jeffs (10-11) squeaked out just five hits and used four pitchers in the loss. Amherst senior Matt Potter plated a pair of runs on a sac fly and an RBI double. Full Story

Jeffs Split NESCAC West Twinbill with Hamilton
April 17 - The Amherst baseball team split a NESCAC West Division doubleheader with visiting Hamilton College (6-16/3-6 NESCAC) on Saturday. The host Jeffs took the seven-inning opener 6-0 behind a four-hit, complete-game pitching performance by senior co-captain Duncan Webb, but left 13 runners on base and surrendered four runs in the top of the 10th inning en route to an 8-4 loss in the nightcap. Jeffs Bang Out 21 Hits in 15-2 Win Over Hamilton
April 16 - The Amherst baseball team evened its NESCAC West Division record at 2-2 and improved to 9-9 overall with a lopsided 15-2 win over visiting conference foe Hamilton College (5-15/2-5 NESCAC) on Friday. The Jeffs hammered out 21 hits, while rookie hurler Brian Donahue ran his record to 4-0 with six innings of three-hit, six-strikeout pitching. Full Story

Jeffs Split Non-League Twinbill with Bowdoin
April 10 - Amherst and visiting Bowdoin split a non-league baseball doubleheader on Saturday. Amherst (8-9) took the opener 6-5 as rookie starter Brian Donahue pitched into the ninth inning to improve his record to 3-0. Bowdoin (15-6) returned the favor with a 5-1 win in Game 2, courtesy of an eight-inning, six-hit pitching performance by sophomore starter Ricky LeClerc. Full Story

Jeffs Bow to Sixth-Ranked Eastern Connecticut, 5-2
April 7 - The Amherst baseball team dropped a 5-2 non-conference decision to sixth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University (14-5) on Wednesday, as senior second baseman Eugene Julien singled twice, stole five bases and scored a run for the visiting Warriors. Amherst starter Andy Kerns surrendered four earned runs in four complete innings to take the loss, falling to 1-3. Full Story

Jeffs Down Visiting Westfield, 6-2
April 6 - Seeing action for the first time in 10 days and playing its first home game of the season, the Amherst baseball team scattered 10 hits and used four different pitchers en route to a 6-2 win over visiting non-league foe Westfield State College on Tuesday. Senior starter Duncan Webb and rookie Brian Donahue each pitched three scoreless innings for the Jeffs, now 7-7 on the season. Webb took the win, upping his record to 3-2. Full Story

April 2 - The Amherst baseball three-game series scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 2-3, at NESCAC West Division rival Middlebury College has been postponed due to inclement weather. No makeup date has yet been announced. Full Schedule

Jeffs Drop 6-5 Nailbiter at Wesleyan
March 29 - Playing the last of a three-game set at NESCAC West Division rival Wesleyan University on Monday, the Amherst College baseball team fell victim to a game-winning RBI double in the ninth inning en route to a 6-5 loss, handing Wesleyan the series, 2-1, after the two teams split a doubleheader on Saturday. Mondayís Game 3 was originally scheduled for Sunday in Amherst but moved due an unplayable Memorial Field. Full Story

Jeffs Open NESCAC Play with Doubleheader Split at Wesleyan
March 27 - The Amherst baseball team opened its NESCAC West Division slate with a doubleheader split at Little Three rival Wesleyan University on Saturday. Wesleyan won the seven-inning opener 2-0 behind a complete-game, three-hit pitching performance by junior Tom Bloss. Amherst (6-6/1-1 NESCAC) took the nine-inning nightcap 6-0, as rookie hurler Brian Donahue went the distance, scattering just three hits with five strikeouts. Full Story

March 23 - The defending NESCAC West Division Champion Amherst baseball teamís home opener against Westfield State College - originally scheduled for Wednesday (Mar. 24) at 3 p.m. - has been postponed due to poor field conditions. Jeffs Finish Florida Trip With 6-1 Loss to St. Thomas
March 22 - The Amherst baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip in Fort Myers, Florida with a 6-1 loss to the University of St. Thomas on Sunday. Senior outfielder Paul Whiting had a pair of singles and sophomore first baseman Dave Levinson had one as well as the Jeffs fell to 5-5 with the loss. Full Story

Jeffs Fall to Denison, 12-9
March 20 - The Amherst baseball team fell to Denison University, 12-9, in Fort Myers, Florida on Saturday. Amherst senior tri-captain Paul Whiting and junior third baseman Josh Santry led the Jeffs offensively as Whiting went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBIís, and Santry drove in four runs with two hits and a sacrifice fly. Rookie Hurlers Lead Jeffs to Wins Over MacMurray, Otterbein
March 19 - First-year pitchers Nick Kehoe and Brian Donahue each earned their first collegiate victory, leading the Amherst baseball team to wins over MacMurray College, 5-3, and Otterbein College, 9-4, in Fort Myers, Florida on Friday. Kehoe tossed five strong innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out three, and Donahue threw a complete game, surrendering just three earned runs on seven hits and a walk, and struck out three as well. Jeffs Blanked by Rowan, 7-0
March 18 - The Amherst baseball team was shutout by Rowan University, 7-0, in Fort Myers, Florida on Thursday. The Jeffs fell to 3-3 with the loss, but junior shortstop Zach Schonberger posted his second straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Full Story

Jeffs Upend St. Lawrence, 10-4
March 17 - The Amherst baseball team posted a 10-4 win over St. Lawrence University in Fort Myers, Florida on Wednesday. Amherst senior catcher Tom Sullivan was outstanding at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two singles, a double, a home run and three RBIís. Junior shortstop Zach Schonberger was impressive as well with a 4-for-6 performance, including a pair of doubles and four RBIís, as the Jeffs improved to 3-2. Full Story

Jeffs Drop Second Straight, Fall to UMass Boston, 9-1
March 16 - The Amherst baseball team lost its second consecutive game, falling to UMass Boston, 9-1, in Fort Myers, Florida on Tuesday night. UMass Boston first-year pitcher Evan Tardugno hurled a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits as the Beacons moved to 3-3 on the season. The Jeffs dropped to 2-2 with the loss, but senior catcher Tom Sullivan extended his early-season hitting streak to four games, going 1-for-2 with a double. Full Story

Jeffs Post First Loss, Fall to Messiah, 6-5
March 15 - The Amherst baseball team continued its spring slate in Fort Myers, Florida on Monday night with a narrow 6-5 loss to Messiah College in a game marred by inclement weather. The rain-soaked loss dropped Amherst to 2-1, while Messiah improved to 3-0. Amherst trailed 6-2 heading into the final inning when junior pinch hitter Joe Houkal cut the deficit to 6-5 with a bases-loaded three-run triple, but the Jeffsí late rally proved to be too little, too late. Jeffs Open Florida Trip with Wins Over Clarkson, Ohio Wesleyan
March 14 - The Amherst baseball team opened its season in Fort Myers, Florida over the weekend with a 3-1 win over Clarkson University on Saturday and a lopsided 10-4 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University on Sunday. Senior starter Duncan Webb pitched five strong innings against Clarkson, striking out a pair and surrendering just one run on two hits. Senior catcher Tom Sullivan led the way offensively against Ohio Wesleyan with three hits and two RBIs. Full Story

Defending NESCAC West Division Champions Boast Veteran Pitching, Defense
February 17 - Defending NESCAC West Division Champion Amherst boasts a solid core of returning veterans, beginning with senior co-captains Andy Kerns and Duncan Webb, the teamís top two starting pitchers. Kerns was stellar last season, earning Second-Team All-NESCAC and Third-Team All-New England honors, while Webb posted a 5-3 record and finished third in the NESCAC with 52 strikeouts.
