Jeffs Down Vassar, Fall to Bates & Colby, at Howe Cup Nationals

NEW HAVEN, CT - Playing in the “B” Division (for teams ranked ninth through 16th nationally) at the Howe Cup Nationals at Yale University over the weekend, the Amherst College women’s squash team won its first-round match over Vassar College, 6-3, before bowing to Bates College by the same score in the semifinals. The Jeffs then played Colby College in an 11-12 playoff match on Sunday, but fell 5-4.

Respective No.’s 1 and 2 seeds Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) and Susanna Burke (St. Louis, MO) were the only Amherst players to win all three of their individual matches.

Bowdoin College claimed the “B” Division title with a 5-4 win over Bates in the championship match. Trinity College swept the Howe Cup “A” Division with a trio of impressive shutout wins over Brown, Penn and Yale.

Amherst concludes its season this Friday through Sunday at the WISA Singles Championships, hosted by Trinity.
