Schifter Named National Player of the Week by WomensLacrosse.com

May 14, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College senior attacker Laura Schifter (Washington, DC) was named the NCAA Division III Player of the Week by WomensLacrosse.com on Wednesday. Schifter dished out a combined eight assists in respective 20-9 and 12-5 NCAA Regional victories over SUNY Cortland and Gettysburg College, sending third-ranked Amherst to its third straight and fourth overall trip to the NCAA Final Four.

Schifter has been a major force on offense. The veteran playmaker is currently seventh in the NESCAC in assists per game (1.67) and second on the Jeffs with 30 total assists. She’s tallied assists in 14 of Amherst’s 18 games, with eight multiple-assist outings along the way, including a five-assist effort in an early-season win over Bates College.

Schifter is the fourth Amherst player to receive weekly accolades this season. Junior midfielder Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD) was named the NESCAC Player of the Week, while first-year attacker Scotty Hanley (Sparks, MD) earned WomensLacrosse.com National Rookie of the Week honors after leading the Jeffs to conference victories over Tufts University and Williams College, as well as a 15-9 win over visiting Wesleyan University in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament. Senior attacker Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) claimed NESCAC Player of the Week honors earlier in the year as well, combining for six goals and six assists in wins over Springfield College and conference-rival Bowdoin.

Amherst opens play at the NCAA Final Four - hosted by St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY - Saturday at 11:30 a.m. against the second-ranked College of New Jersey. The winner will advance to the NCAA Championship game, taking on either Middlebury College or William Smith, Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

Tickets for all three games can be purchased for $10, while individual game tickets are $6. All tickets will be sold at the main gate prior to the games.
