Jeffs Stumble at Colby, 5-3

FROM A COLBY COLLEGE RELEASE

December 6, 2002

WATERVILLE, ME - After skating to a pair of ties against Connecticut College, the Amherst women's hockey team fell 5-3 at NESCAC foe Colby College on Friday night. Sophomore forward Michele Barmash (Kirkland, PQ) led the hosts with a pair of goals and two assists while senior forward Danielle Williams (Needham, MA) netted a pair for the Jeffs.

The White Mules pierced the scoring column just 1:20 into the contest when Barmash found the back of the net with a wrister. Shortly thereafter, she tickled the twine again, extending the Colby lead to 2-0 heading into the second stanza. The White Mules took a three goal lead 5:11 into the second period when Mallory Young (Hanover, NH) scored. Amherst countered with two goals in 27 seconds to cut the lead to 3-2. Senior Merrill Hawkins (Chesnut Hill, MA) tallied to open the third period and put the Mules back up by a pair. Williams notched her second goal of the game, cutting the deficit to 4-3 before Jill Young (Edina, MN) gave Colby an insurance goal with 4:51 remaining, setting the final score at 5-3.

Jeff senior netminder Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN) stopped 30 shots while Lynn Hasday (Rockville Centre, NY) turned aside 20 for the White Mules. With the loss, Amherst falls to 0-3-2 overall while Colby improves to 4-2.

The Jeffs return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. at NESCAC rival Bowdoin College.
