Jeffs Keep Playoff Hopes Alive With 2-0 Win Over Colby

February 15, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Forced to play with just three defenders after losing junior Amanda Muller (Princeton, NJ) for the season with a torn knee ligament, a depleted Amherst College women's hockey team kept its playoff hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over visiting league foe Colby College on Saturday. Junior forward Ali White (Brookline, MA) and rookie defender Bethany Croy (Belmont, MA) notched goals for the Jeffs, while senior netminder Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN) finished with 27 saves to earn the shutout.

After a scoreless first period, Croy unleashed a left-handed wrister from the blue line that found its way through a screen and into the back of the net to give Amherst a 1-0 advantage midway through the second. Later that period, White struck for her third goal of the year when she skated past a pair of defenders and slid the puck through sophomore Sarah Webster's (Shelburne, VT) legs, rounding the scoring out at 2-0. Webster turned aside 22 shots for Colby.

With the victory, the Jeffs improve to 2-15-4 overall and 2-10-3 in NESCAC play, while the White Mules drop to 8-11-1 and 6-7-1. Amherst currently holds the seventh and final seed for the NESCAC Postseason Championship tournament, which is slated to begin on March 1. With one league game remaining against Hamilton College next Saturday, the Jeffs are fighting to hold off Connecticut College (currently ranked ninth in the NESCAC with a 1-9-2 league record) who has four conference games remaining on its schedule. Trinity College stands in the eighth spot but has played all of its league games and is now out of contention.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. against visiting non-league foe Holy Cross.
