Jeffs Remain Perfect with 61-56 Win Over Westfield State in Pioneer Valley Women's Basketball Classic, Hosted by Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA - Amherst junior guard Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) drained a game-high 23 points to lead the Lord Jeffs past Westfield State, 61-56. Amherst, which won both games in the Classic, improves to 5-0 overall. First-year center Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) added her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior center Melissa Cote (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) led the Owls (4-2) with 14 points.

Later on Saturday, junior guard Kelly McOmber (Woodbury, Conn.) poured in a game-high 17 points to lead Springfield College past Western New England College, 60-46, in the second night of the inaugural Pioneer Valley Women's Hoop Classic.

SC, which has won all eight meetings with the Golden Bears, improves to 3-2 with the win while WNEC falls to 4-3. The Prideís bench played a major role in the win, as SCís reserves outscored WNECís bench, 24-8. Freshman forward Kate Baumann (Berlin, Conn.) contributed to the win with 12 points and sophomore guard Angela Farrigan (Latham, N.Y.) added six points, four rebounds and three assists in 11 minutes. SC also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Golden Bears, 49-31. Senior center Janna Dietz (Folgelsville, Pa.) pulled down a game-high 14 boards and blocked three shots.

Amherst returns to action Monday at 7 p.m. against visiting non-league Coast Guard.
