Jeffs Drop Sixth-Straight, Fall to Williams, 64-48

January 25, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Senior forward Sarah Walker (W. Hartford, CT) tied career-highs with 18 rebounds and four steals while notching a team-high 17 points, but it was not enough to help the Amherst College women's basketball team on Saturday, as the Jeffs dropped their sixth-straight, falling to visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Williams College, 64-48.

Amherst led early in the contest but Williams rallied with a 12-2 run en route to a 34-21 halftime advantage. The second half saw much of the same, as the Ephs continued to tack on to the lead. It didn't help that the Jeffs turned the ball over 27 times in the game and shot 30.0% from the field. However, Williams wasn't much better, managing to shoot just 18-for-51 (35.3%) with 19 turnovers.

The Ephs placed three players in double figures - senior guard Kate Stumpo (Walpole, MA), rookie guard Colleen Hession (Northampton, MA) and senior guard Melissa Skeffington (Woburn, MA) finished with 18, 16 and 14 points, respectively.

With the loss, the Jeffs drop to 9-7 overall and remain winless in conference play at 0-4. Meanwhile, Williams posted its ninth consecutive victory and improved to 13-3 and 3-0. On a historical note, senior point guard Sara Bozorg (Amherst, MA) picked up four steals, propelling her past Ellen Mager '86 to earn the Amherst career record with 193 thefts and counting.

The Jeffs return to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Tufts University.
