Jeffs Split Doubleheader With Westfield State

April 16, 2003

AMHERST, MA - After splitting a twinbill against visiting Trinity College on Saturday, the Amherst College softball team split another doubleheader, this time against non-league foe Westfield State College. The Jeffs rallied to win Game 1, 7-6, in extra innings, while the Owls rebounded to take Game 2, 1-0.

In the opener, Amherst led 4-1 before Westfield rallied with three runs in the sixth inning to even the score at 4-4. Each team sent a runner across home plate in the eighth inning to knot the score at 6-6. Senior outfielder Michelle Prall (Hull, MA) smacked an RBI-single to give the Owls the lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

The Jeffs countered when senior shortstop Missy Mordy (Sammamish, WA) drilled a single that skipped under the glove of the charging leftfielder, sending the tying and winning runs across home plate. Jeff rookie pitcher Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) improved to 12-4, while junior Sarah Simmons (Salem, MA) took the loss for the Owls and dropped to 4-2. Junior third baseman Jess Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH) finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's and runs scored for the Jeffs, while junior outfielder Suzie Scott (Tewksbury, MA) went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored to lead the Owls.

In the nightcap, Westfield first-year shortstop Ashley Brogan (Spencer, MA) singled with one out in the fourth. Shortly thereafter, she came around to tally the game's lone run after a throwing error by the Jeffs. Warner took the loss, falling to 12-5, while sophomore hurler Leah Peterson (Lakeville, MA) tossed a three-hit shutout, improving to 5-1. With the split, Amherst moves to 12-8 overall, while Westfield State goes to 9-5.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at conference foe Middlebury College.
