Jeffs Down Keene State, Bow to Bowdoin

March 19, 2003

FORT MYERS, FL - After rain postponed a pair of games in Fort Myers, Florida on Monday, the Amherst College softball team returned to the diamond on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Keene State and a 5-3 loss to Bowdoin College.

Rookie hurler Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) tossed both ends of the doubleheader, including a 12-strikeout, three-hit pitching performance against Keene State. She also went 1-for-2 with an RBI in the win, while senior shortstop Missy Mordy (Sammamish, WA) added two hits and scored a run. Senior outfielder Tamara Baer (Amherst, NY) added a pair of hits, while first-year catcher Kate Raddock (Stamford, CT) drove in a run and went 1-for-3.

In the loss to Bowdoin, which plays in the NESCAC East Division (Amherst plays in the NESCAC West), Warner (2-1) struck out five and allowed just six hits but was victimized by five unearned runs. Mordy had two hits and drove in two runs, but left the game with an injury. Amherst committed four errors shortly thereafter, as several Jeffs were forced to play out of position. Rookie Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA) tripled and scored two runs in the loss.

Now 2-2 on the season, Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Lasell College, followed by a 9 p.m. tilt against Endicott College; a pair of games originally scheduled for Monday but postponed due to rain.
