19th-Ranked Jeffs Fall to Fourth-Ranked Middlebury, 8-6

April 13, 2003

AMHERST, MA - After dropping a heartbreaker to Wesleyan University yesterday, the 19th-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team fell to visiting NESCAC foe Middlebury College, 8-6, Sunday at Hitchcock Field. Junior attackman Mike Allison (West Nyack, NY) paced the Jeffs with a pair of goals and an assist.

The Panthers took a 3-0 advantage into the second quarter before Amherst rallied to take the lead. Allison pierced the scoring column 3:20 into the stanza to put the Jeffs on the board. He notched his second goal of the game with 8:21 remaining in the first half to give the hosts a 4-3 lead at the break.

Middlebury evened the score less than a minute into the second half when senior middie Mike Frissora (Sudbury, MA) tickled the twine. Moments later, they regained the lead when junior attackman Mike Saraceni (Syracuse, NY) tallied his second goal of the contest. They extended the advantage to 7-4 when junior midfielder Greg Bastis (Greenwich, CT) scored. Jeff senior middie Matt Margolis (Short Hills, NJ) ripped a rocket into the top corner to round the scoring out at 8-6.

Sophomore netminder Cushing Donelan (Noroton, CT) was stellar and finished with nine saves for the Jeffs, while Panther junior Eric Kreiger (Princeton, NJ) recorded 13. With the loss, Amherst drops to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in league play, while fourth-ranked Middlebury improves to 9-1 and 6-0.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting conference foe Tufts University.
