February 24, 2003

BRUNSWICK, ME & CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Amherst women’s indoor track team notched an eighth-place finish behind first-place Williams College at this weekend’s New England Division III Track and Field Championships, hosted by Bowdoin College. Meanwhile, the Amherst men finished in 15th place at their New England Division III Championship meet, behind first-place host MIT.

For the women, senior tri-captain Kate Hamill (New York, NY) broke onto the scoreboard with a fifth-place time in the 600-meter run. Classmate tri-captain Laurel Kilgour (Clifton Park, NY) followed up with eighth place in the 800-meter run, and junior Alyson Venti (Newton, MA) narrowly missed out on collecting points, with ninth place in the 1,000-meter run. Sophomore Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) grabbed second place for Amherst in the 5,000-meter run behind Williams’ Caroline Cretti. The Amherst relay teams were strong - the 4x200-meter group reeled in sixth place, and the 4x400- and 4x800-meter delegations pulled in third- and fourth- place times, respectively. The Distance Medley relay came through with a fourth-place finish. First-year Lyndsey Scott (Minneapolis, MN) continued her strong rookie campaign, tacking on a sixth-place performance in the triple jump.

On the men’s side, sophomore Mike Page (Fargo, ND) was the first Amherst runner to score points, via an eighth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. The 4x400-meter relay team notched a fifth-place time, and the 4x800-meter squad added a sixth-place time. First-year Ngai Otieno (Gloucester, MA) collected sixth place in the long jump to end the Amherst scoring rush.

This Friday and Saturday, the men and women will take on their respective Open New England meets. The women will travel to nearby Smith College, and the men will head to Boston University.
