Amherst Women Third, Men Sixth, at Tufts

January 18, 2003

MEDFORD, MA - The Amherst women’s indoor track team opened up its January slate with an impressive third-place showing behind nationally top-ranked winner Williams College and host Tufts University at the Tufts invitational on Saturday. Amherst’s men followed suit with a sixth-place finish behind first-place Tufts.

For the women, senior tri-captain Kate Hamill (New York, NY) legged out a first-place finish in the 600-meter run, a split-second before Keene State College’s Mary Proulx and Shannon O’Brien, who took second and third places, respectively. Amherst first-year Jessamyn Connell-Price (Palo Alto, CA) and senior tri-captain Laurel Kilgour (Clifton Park, NY) added respective first- and second-place times in the 800-meter run, and sophomore Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) tacked on a fourth-place showing in the 1,000-meter run. Carter Hamill and junior Alyson Venti (Newton, MA) put their own signatures on the Amherst day with second- and fourth-place finishes in the 1,500-meter run, and senior Alison Dimon (Rye, NY) and first-year Jenny Horwitz (Waban, MA) rounded out the Amherst flurry with respective second and fourth places in the 3,000 meter run.

Amherst also represented well in the long jump, triple jump and high jump. First-year Lyndsey Scott (West Orange, NJ) and senior tri-captain Alison Stahl (Amston, CT) placed third and eighth, respectively, in the long jump, and first-year Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) landed in sixth place in the triple jump. Scott showed up again in the high jump - she grappled with Williams’ Joyia Chadwick and Ronni Weinstein and Northeastern University’s Brittney Cosgrove for a four-way tie for third place, and paced Jeff first-year Ariel Haney (Fairport, NY) for a seventh-place finish. The Amherst women finished off their day with third-place finishes in the 4x400-meter relay and the 4x800-meter relay.

Meanwhile, sophomore Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO) kicked the day off for the Amherst men with a second-place finish in the 55-meter dash, before notching a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Nathaniel Mahlberg (Madison, WI) grabbed eighth place in the 200-meter dash, and then hung on for another eighth-place time in the 400-meter dash. Junior Andrew Schneider (Saratoga Springs, NY) was the next Jeff to put points on the board for Amherst - he placed fourth in both the 1,000-meter run and the 1,500-meter run. Senior tri-captain Pat Hayes (E. Bridgewater, MA) picked up the pace via a second-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles.

Junior Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) snagged a first-place performance in the triple jump, before Amherst’s 4x400-meter relay team placed fifth to cap Amherst’s day.

The women’s team will travel to Boston University for Friday’s Terrier Classic, before rejoining the men’s team at Wesleyan University on Saturday for the Wesleyan Invitational.
