Jeffs Edge Tufts in Overtime, 4-3

MEDFORD, MA - First-year forward Ted Bickel (Minnetonka, MN) netted his fourth goal of the season with 1:18 remaining in overtime to give the Amherst College men's hockey team a 4-3 victory over Tufts University on Saturday. With the victory, the Jeffs improve to 7-11-4 overall and 7-7-3 in NESCAC play, good for sixth place in the conference standings. The top eight teams in league play qualify for the NESCAC Tournament.

The Jumbos jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Sophomore forward Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) tallied his team-leading 19th goal on the powerplay, cutting the deficit to 2-1 heading into the third period. Sophomore Thierry Pauyo (Montreal, Quebec) found the back of the net early in the third to even the score at 2-2. Tufts regained the lead midway through the period when sophomore John Hurd (Arlington, MA) notched a powerplay goal. Jeff first-year forward Steve Nelson (Wayzata, MN) scored with 1:49 left in regulation to force overtime. Bickel then struck for the game-winner.

Rookie netminder Sean Lynch (Essex Junction, VT) finished with 19 saves for Amherst, while first-year Matt Ninneman (New Brighton, MA) turned aside 22 shots for Tufts. The Jumbos dropped to 7-8-4 and 7-8-2.

The Jeffs have a pair of league games remaining on their regular season schedule. They return to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting Bowdoin College before hosting Colby College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
