Zieja Tabbed NABC Northeast Region Player of the Year, First-Team All-American

March 21, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College senior tri-captain forward Steve Zieja’s (Hadley, MA) trophy case is overflowing with postseason accolades. Already named the NESCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, First-Team All-Northeast, First-Team All-NESCAC, First-Team Verizon Academic All-District and NESCAC Winter All-Academic, Zieja was tabbed the Northeast Region Player of the Year and First-Team All-District by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) on Friday. As one of eight regional player of the year recipients, Zieja automatically qualifies for First-Team NABC All-America honors and is a finalist for NABC National Player of the Year consideration. The NABC will announce its national player of the year early next week.

Zieja was one of three players from the NESCAC to earn First-Team NABC All-Northeast Region honors, along with Williams College’s Michael Crotty and Ben Coffin. Tufts University’s Mike McGlynn was a second-team selection.

Zieja - one of ten finalists for Jostens Trophy National Player of the Year honors, which were eventually awarded to Derek Reich of the University of Chicago - led the Jeffs to a school-record 24 wins and their first trip to the NCAA Elite Eight since 1994.

A two-year captain and three-time All-NESCAC selection, Zieja is the leading scorer in Amherst history with 1,708 points. Along with fellow senior tri-captains Pat Fitzsimons (Durham, NC) and Ryan Faulkner (Lebanon, NH), Zieja helped lead the Jeffs to a school-record 87 wins, back-to-back NESCAC Championships (in 2001 and 2002) and four straight NCAA Tournament berths.
