Zieja Named First-Team D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region

March 19, 2003

AMHERST, MA - NESCAC Menís Basketball Player of the Year and Jostens Trophy National Player of the Year finalist Steve Zieja (Hadley, MA) was named First-Team All-Northeast Region by D3hoops.com on Wednesday, as selected by sports information directors from around the region. Zieja, a senior tri-captain forward at Amherst College, led the Jeffs to a school-record 24 wins and their first trip to the NCAA Elite Eight since 1994.

Zieja was one of three players from the NESCAC to earn First-Team All-Region honors, along with Williams senior guard Michael Crotty (Belmont, MA) and Wesleyan junior forward Kanem Johnson (New Haven, CT). D3hoops.com will announce its All-America team later this week.

A two-year captain and three-time All-NESCAC selection, Zieja is the leading scorer in Amherst history with 1,708 points. Along with fellow senior tri-captains Pat Fitzsimons (Durham, NC) and Ryan Faulkner (Lebanon, NH), Zieja helped lead the Jeffs to a school-record 87 wins, back-to-back NESCAC Championships (in 2001 and 2002) and four straight NCAA Tournament berths. He was recently named Verizon Academic All-District for the second straight year, is a finalist for Academic All-America consideration and was a First-Team All-Region, All-ECAC and All-District pick as a junior.
