11th-Ranked Jeffs Improve to 19-3 with 79-62 Win Over Conn.

February 14, 2003

AMHERST, MA - With just one regular-season game remaining and a stranglehold on first place in the NESCAC, the 11th-ranked Amherst College menís basketball team continued its winning ways with a 79-62 conference victory over visiting Connecticut College on Friday night. The win, which upped their record to 19-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play, moved the Jeffs one step closer to earning the top seed in the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, which they can seal with a win over visiting Little Three rival Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.

Amherst placed four players in double figures, led by sophomore forward Andrew Schielís (Wayne, PA) 16 points. Fellow sophomore John Donovan (Holmdel, NJ) and seniors Steve Zieja (Hadley, MA) and Pat Fitzsimons (Durham, NC) added 13, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Donovanís bakerís dozen came on a blazing 4-for-4 showing from the three-point arc. One of his treys resulted in a four-point play midway through the second half at a point where Conn. had cut what was a 24-point Amherst advantage down to 10 points.

Senior shooting guard Kevin Herrington (Everett, MA) paced Conn. (7-15/1-7 NESCAC) with 16 points but shot just 5-for-19 from the field. Classmate Joe Tremblay (Lebanon, CT) chipped in with 14.

Saturdayís game against visiting Wesleyan is set for 3 p.m. The Jeffs are currently tied with sixth-ranked Williams College for the top spot in the NESCAC standings. Amherst holds the tiebreaker, however, by virtue of a 67-61 conference win over the Ephs earlier this season.

The eight-team NESCAC Tournament will begin on Saturday, Feb. 22. The top four seeds will host first-round games. The semifinal and final rounds will be held at the highest remaining seed.
