Zieja Eclipses Career Scoring Record in 90-60 Win at Bates

LEWISTON, ME - Senior tri-captain forward Steve Zieja (Hadley, MA) hit a layup with 2:33 remaining to become Amherst College's all-time leading scorer in Saturdayís 90-60 menís basketball victory over NESCAC rival Bates College. With 13 points on Saturday, Zieja has now recorded 1,552 in his career at Amherst, surpassing Jamal Wilson, who poured in 1,550 points before graduating in 1997.

Junior sharpshooter John Donovan (Holmdel, NJ) added a team-high 22 points to pace Amherst (16-3/5-1 NESCAC), which rebounded from last nightís 83-66 upset loss at Tufts University. Sophomore Andrew Schiel (Wayne, PA) chipped in with 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while junior Adam Harper (Washington, DC) tallied 13 points and six takeaways. The Jeffs forced 22 turnovers and converted them into 29 points.

Amherst trailed 30-26 with 6:11 remaining in the first half, but reeled off 16 straight points for a 42-30 advantage at the break. The lead would balloon to 19 in the second half when Amherst went on a 16-7 run, capped by a Harper layup.

Co-captain Angelo Salvaggio (Portland, ME) poured in a game-high 25 points for Bates (16-3/4-1 NESCAC). Brian Gerrity (Manchester, ME) added 10 points. Co-captain C.J. Neely (North Easton, MA) was held without a field goal in the game, and didnít score his first point until there was 9:56 remaining when he canned a pair of free throws.

Amherst returns to action next Saturday at 3 p.m. at NESCAC rival Trinity College.
