Jeffs Place Five on All-NESCAC Team;
Kerns Tabbed Third-Team All-New England

May 16 - Amherst placed five players - senior co-captain John Schneider, juniors Andy Kerns, Tom Sullivan and Paul Whiting, and sophomore Josh Santry - on the 2003 All-NESCAC Baseball Team. All five were second-team picks. Kerns was also a Third-Team All-New England selection. Full Story

22nd-Ranked Trinity Wins NESCAC Baseball Championship with Doubleheader Sweep Over Amherst
May 11 - Senior first baseman Kurt Piantek went 5-for-8 with three home runs, six RBI’s and four runs scored to lead 22nd-ranked Trinity to a doubleheader sweep over host Amherst in the championship round of the NESCAC Postseason Baseball Tournament. Trinity needed a pair of victories to emerge from the losers bracket, winning the opener 11-6 and the nightcap 5-3, securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Amherst’s season ends at 21-12. Full Story

Schneider Homers Jeffs Into NESCAC Title Game;
Trinity Advances in Losers Bracket, Williams and Tufts Eliminated

May 10 - Amherst senior co-captain John Schneider drilled a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday, giving the host Jeffs a dramatic 3-2 win over Trinity and their first-ever trip to the NESCAC Tournament championship game. Amherst will again face Trinity, which rebounded with a 14-4 win over Williams in a losers bracket elimination game, Sunday at 10 a.m., with the conference title and an automatic berth in the Division III NCAA Tournament at stake. Williams blanked Tufts 6-0 earlier on Saturday at American International College, ending the Jumbos’ season at 21-10. Full Story

Kerns Pitches Baseball Past Tufts in First Round of NESCAC Tournament;
22nd-Ranked Trinity Advances with 9-8 Win Over Williams

May 9 - The Amherst baseball team scored four runs in the eighth inning to give starter Andy Kerns his third complete game victory of the season, a 5-1 win over visiting Tufts University, in day one of the double elimination NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, hosted by Amherst. Twenty-second ranked Trinity College joined Amherst in the winners’ bracket with a 9-8 win over Williams College, played at nearby American International College (AIC). Full Story

Powers Plates Game-Winner in Ninth; Jeffs Down Springfield, 6-4
May 6 - Sophomore left fielder David Powers went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s and drove in the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning, as the Amherst baseball team won its regular-season finale, 6-4, at Springfield College on Tuesday. Powers’ single snapped a 4-4 tie in the final frame, upping the NESCAC West Division Champion Jeffs’ overall record to 19-10 entering the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, which Amherst will host this Friday through Sunday. Levinson Named NESCAC Player of the Week;
Amherst to Host NESCAC Championship Tournament this Friday Through Sunday

May 6 - Rookie first baseman Dave Levinson earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors after leading Amherst to a three-game sweep over visiting Middlebury on Saturday and Sunday. The trio of wins gave the Jeffs the NESCAC West Division championship, as well as the host seed for the conference championship tournament to be held this Friday through Sunday at Amherst’s Memorial Field and American International College in nearby Springfield, Mass. Schonberger Single in 11th Gives Jeffs 8-7 Win Over Middlebury
May 4 - Rookie shortstop Zach Schonberger singled home senior co-captain John Schneider with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to give the Amherst baseball team a dramatic 8-7 come-from-behind win over visiting Middlebury College on Sunday. Middlebury, which took a 6-0 lead into the sixth inning, needed a win to qualify for the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament. Instead, the Panthers finish their season at 11-11-1 (7-5 NESCAC), and Williams College qualifies for the postseason in their place. Full Story

Jeffs Clinch West Division Crown, Top Seed in NESCAC Tournament, with Doubleheader Sweep Over Middlebury
May 3 - Behind complete-game pitching performances by juniors Andy Kerns and Duncan Webb, the Amherst baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Middlebury College on Saturday, 10-2 and 2-1, and clinched the NESCAC West Division crown and the host seed in next weekend’s NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament.
