Jeffs Clinch West Division Crown, Top Seed in NESCAC Tournament, with Doubleheader Sweep Over Middlebury

May 3, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Behind complete-game pitching performances by juniors Andy Kerns (Barrington, IL) and Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA), the Amherst College baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Middlebury College on Saturday, 10-2 and 2-1, and clinched the NESCAC West Division crown and the host seed in next weekendís NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament.

Kerns was dominant in the opener, scattering eight hits and striking out 10 in nine innings, earning his second complete game victory of the season and upping his unblemished pitching record to 5-0. The Jeffs scored in six different innings, sealing the win with four runs in the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles from junior Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) and sophomore Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ), and a two-run homer by rookie Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA), his second of the season. Levinson also had a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning and finished 2-for-4 with four RBIís and a run scored. Santry, senior co-captain John Schneider (Grand Rapids, MI) and Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) added two hits each.

Middlebury starter David Riester (Appleton, WI) pitched seven innings and gave up nine runs on 10 hits before giving way to Bryan Lodigiani (Pennington, NJ). Denver Smith (Weybridge, VT) and Abe Streep (S. Nyack, NY) paced the Panthers with two hits each. Middlebury committed five errors in the loss.

Webb (4-3) was spectacular in the nightcap, surrendering just one unearned run on five hits and striking out eight, including two punch-outs in each of the second and third innings and a trio of kís in the sixth.

Amherst opened the scoring in the second inning when sophomore Dave Powers (Andover, MA) singled and scored on a groundout by junior Brandon Cody (Boston, MA). Middlebury evened the score with an unearned run in the fourth as Riester, who played second base in game two, reached on an infield error and eventually trotted home on an errant throw by the shortstop. Amherst won the game in the sixth thanks in part to three Middlebury errors. Schneider scored the game winner on a throwing error.

The Jeffs managed just four hits off Middlebury starter Russ Budnick (New Canaan, CT), who went the distance but was victimized by five Middlebury errors. Budnick took the loss to fall to 2-3. Powers had two hits for Amherst, while Jim Muhlfeld (Darien, CT) went 2-for-3 for Middlebury.

The Jeffs (17-10/9-2 NESCAC) and Panthers (11-10-1/7-4 NESCAC) wrap up their three-game set Sunday at noon. Middlebury needs a victory to clinch a spot in the four-team NESCAC Tournament. A loss would send Williams College into the postseason instead of the Panthers.
