Cathy Poor Named to Verizon Academic All-America Women's Soccer Team
February 8 - Cathy Poor of Amherst College and Katie Buchert of Ohio Wesleyan University, whose teams met in the Division III National championship game, were among the student-athletes named to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-America Women's Soccer Teams, announced today after voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Poor and Diamond Tabbed Verizon/CoSIDA District 1 All-Academic
January 10 - Two key figures in Amherst College's recent run to the Division III Women's Soccer National Championship game, senior tri-captain midfielder Cathy Poor and junior goalkeeper Brooke Diamond, were named to the Verizon District I College Division All-Academic Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. As first-team selections, both advance to the national ballot for Verizon Academic All-America consideration. Full Story

Morgan Tabbed NSCAA/Adidas New England Coach of the Year
November 30 - Amherst head women's soccer coach Michelle Morgan was selected by her peers as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas NCAA Division III New England Coach of the Year after leading the Jeffs to a 16-5-1 overall record and a first-ever trip to the NCAA Championship game. She will be formally recognized at the College Coaches Luncheon at the NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia on Thursday, January 17, 2002. Full Story

Jeffs Fall, 1-0, in NCAA Championship Game at Ohio Wesleyan
November 17 - Junior Ohio Wesleyan midfielder Katy Sturtz scored in the 38th minute of Saturday's NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Game, and the Bishop defense held off a late rally from Amherst College, holding on for a 1-0 victory and the 2001 NCAA Tournament title. The Jeffs, led by the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player, senior tri-captain Cathy Poor , finished their best-ever season with a record of 16-5-1. Junior back Katharine Shipley and senior tri-captain Margaret Rubin joined Poor on the NCAA All-Tournament Team. Full Story

Jeffs Blank Wheaton, 1-0, in NCAA Semifinals
November 16 - Senior tri-captain Cathy Poor headed home a free kick from sophomore midfielder Jenny Rossman in the 73rd minute to lift the Amherst women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Wheaton (IL) College in Friday's NCAA National Semifinals at Ohio Wesleyan University. The Jeffs picked up their 10th consecutive win, advancing to the NCAA Championship game (to be played Saturday at 1 p.m.) for the first time in school history, where they will face the winner of Friday's second semifinal between Willamette University and host Ohio Wesleyan. Jeffs Headed to Ohio Wesleyan for NCAA Final Four
November 12 - The Amherst women's soccer team picked up its school-record 15th win of the season and ninth in a row with a dramatic 1-0 victory over fourth-ranked William Smith College in Saturday's national quarterfinals in Geneva, New York, earning a spot in their second-ever NCAA Final Four, where they will face No. 5 Wheaton College of Illinois in one of two national semifinals Friday at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, about 20 miles north of Columbus. Ohio Wesleyan, the number-two team in the nation, will face Willamette University, the sixth-ranked team in the latest poll, in Friday's nightcap, with the winners facing off on Saturday for the 2001 NCAA Division III Championship. W-Soccer Advances to NCAA Final Four With 1-0 Win at William Smith
November 10 - First-year striker Adrienne Showler scored in the 12th minute of Saturday's NCAA women's soccer National Quarterfinal at William Smith College and the Amherst defense, led by junior goalie Brooke Diamond, made the goal stand up as the Jeffs knocked off the host Herons, 1-0, to advance to their second-ever NCAA Final Four.
