FROM A MIDDLEBURY RELEASE

MIDDLEBURY, VT - The third-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team was downed by top-ranked host Middlebury College, 13-7, in the NESCAC Championship game Sunday afternoon at Kohn Field. The Panthers earned their second consecutive title and an automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament in which pairings will be announced tonight at 9 p.m.

Middlebury jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes. Nuala O'Donahue scored on a free position shot at 27:29 to get the ball rolling for the Panthers. Kristin Haley and Meg Bonney tallied goals just 15 seconds apart before O'Donahue went coast-to-coast, scoring her second goal of the game and extending the lead to 4-0. The Panthers added two more goals before Amherst junior attacker Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) pierced the scoring column at the 18:00 mark, dodging past a swarm of defenders and firing a sharp angled shot into the back of the net. With the Panthers leading 8-2, Ouimet and sophomore midfielder Jackie Sargent (Concord, MA) tallied to cut the lead to 8-4 at halftime.

Amherst opened the second half with another goal by Sargent, narrowing the margin to 8-5. Middlebury then answered with a pair of goals and Sargent countered with her third goal of the game to set the score at 10-6. The Panthers went on to score a trio of goals before junior attacker Laura Schifter (Washington, D.C.) found the back of the net with 37 seconds remaining for the 13-7 final score.

Junior goaltender Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) finished with 13 saves for the Jeffs, while Middlebury netminder Sarah Grenert recorded 14. With the loss, Amherst drops to 12-2 overall, while the Panthers improve to 14-0.

Amherst will return to action on Wednesday, pending the outcome of tonight's NCAA Tournament draw.
