Jeffs Advance to NESCAC Championship Game with 17-8 Victory Over Williams

May 4, 2002

MIDDLEBURY, VT - The third-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team advanced to the NESCAC Championship game after downing Little Three rival Williams College, 17-8, Saturday afternoon at Kohn Artificial Field. Junior attacker Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) paced the Jeffs with six goals and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD) also chipped in with four goals and a trio of assists.

The Ephs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Amherst quickly countered when Martin and sophomore attacker Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) tickled the twine, evening the score at 2-2. The Jeffs went on to score six more unanswered goals, taking an 8-2 lead into halftime. Ouimet tallied four consecutive goals in the final stanza, extending the Amherst lead to 14-3. The Ephs rallied with four straight goals but came up short. Amherst scored with 46 seconds remaining to set the final score at 17-8.

Junior goaltenders Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) and first-year Olivia D'Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) combined to record 17 saves for the Jeffs, while Abi Jackson and Ann Woods combined to stop nine Amherst shots.

With the victory, Amherst improves to 12-1 overall and will look to avenge an early season loss to top-ranked host Middlebury College, in the NESCAC Championship game Sunday at noon.
