AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's basketball team used balanced scoring and a 20-2 run over the game's first 8:23 to dismantle visiting non-league foe Western New England College, 65-32, Tuesday night at LeFrak Gymnasium. The Jeffs (3-1) held WNEC (5-2) to just eight field goals and 18.2 percent (8-for-44) shooting en route to their third straight victory, snapping the Golden Bears' five-game winning streak.

Amherst placed four players in double figures, led by 12 points each from sophomore guards LaShauna Barboza (New Bedford, MA) and Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA). Fellow sophomore Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) tied a career-high with 11 points, while junior forward Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) added a career-high 10 points and tied sophomore center Caitlin Farrell (Lafayette, CA) with a team-high seven rebounds.

Diamond scored eight of the Jeffs' first 10 points on a pair of layups and two offensive putbacks as Amherst jumped out to an early 20-2 lead and didn't allow a WNEC field goal until 11:13 into the game. The Jeffs led by as many as 24 points before the break, and stretched the gap to as many as 36 points in the second half, taking their largest lead, 61-25, on a McGuire three-pointer with 4:03 left in regulation.

Junior forward Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA) led WNEC with eight points on 3-for-16 shooting, while rookie Katie Blaha (Attleboro, MA) added seven points on 2-for-10 shooting and a game-high nine rebounds.

Amherst returns to action Thursday night at 6:00 against visiting non-conference rival Wellesley College.
