SOUTH HADLEY, MA - A depleted Amherst College women's basketball team opened its season with a 70-60 overtime loss at non-league foe Mt. Holyoke College on Tuesday. The host Lyons outscored Amherst, playing without junior captains Sara Bozorg (Amherst, MA) and Sarah Walker (West Hartford, CT) - both studying abroad - 15-5 in the overtime session, as they improved to 2-0 on the season.

Sophomore forward Sarah Bergman (Shaftsbury, VT) carried the Jeffs in defeat with team-highs of 17 points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard LaShauna Barboza (New Bedford, MA) added a career-high 10 points, while first-year Kate Herlihy (Glens Falls, NY) chipped in with nine points in her collegiate debut. Mt. Holyoke placed three players in double figures, led by 18 points each from guard Kara Bergeron and center Jessica Justice.

The Lyons won the game from the charity stripe, sinking more free throws (23) than Amherst even attempted (17). In fact, Mt. Holyoke shot 41 free throws compared to Amherst's 17, and the Jeffs were called for 29 fouls, while the Lyons were whistled for just 17. Bergman fouled out for Amherst, leaving a huge hole in the paint late in the game. Herlihy, sophomore forward Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) and senior captains Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) and Hallison Putnam (Lexington, KY) each played with four fouls down the stretch.

Amherst returns to action for its home-opener Thursday night at 7 p.m. against visiting non-league foe Keene State.
