Women's Hoop Wins Second Straight Conference Game, 74-54, Over Conn.

Hallison Putnam '02
Senior guard Hallison Putnam dished out a game-high five assists in her final regular-season home game
AMHERST, MA - After entering the weekend winless in NESCAC play, the Amherst College women's basketball team posted it second conference win in as many days on Saturday, pounding visiting Connecticut College, 74-54, at LeFrak Gymnasium. Sophomore shooting guard Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) paced the Jeffs with a game-high 15 points, while junior quad-captain forward Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) added eight points and tied a career-high with 11 rebounds.

The action went back-and-forth for the first 13 minutes before Amherst blew the game open with a 10-0 flurry in the latter part of the first half. Senior quad-captain Hallison Putnam (Lexington, KY), playing in perhaps the final home game of her career, capped the barrage with a long-range trifecta from the top of the arc with 4:20 left before the break. The Jeffs then extended their lead to 12 points, 35-23, on an offensive putback and a pair of free throws by Diamond, and gained one last possession after Conn. College junior forward Margaret Guernsey (Essex, CT) was whistled for traveling with two seconds left. Looking to extend its halftime lead to 15 points, Amherst threw an ill-advised baseball pass toward midcourt, where it was picked off by first-year guard Mary Bushnell (Old Saybrook, CT). With under a second left, Bushnell turned and launched a 40-foot buzzer-beating bank shot, cutting Conn.'s halftime deficit to 35-26.

The second half was all Amherst, however, as a left-wing jumper by Russell pushed the lead to double-digits, where it remained for the rest of the game. The Jeffs would widen the gap to as many as 22 points down the stretch, with first-year guard Kate Herlihy (Glens Falls, NY) nailing a jumper from just inside the three-point arc for a 59-37 Amherst advantage at the 10:09-mark. Both teams emptied their benches in the waning minutes, as Amherst improved to 11-10 overall and 2-5 in NESCAC play with the lopsided victory.

Jeffs sophomore center Caitlin Farrell (Lafayette, CA) joined Russell in double figures with 11 points in just 14 minutes off the bench. Fellow Amherst sophomore Sarah Walker (Shaftsbury, VT) also had a strong outing with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Erin Shields (Savannah, GA) paced the Camels with 12 points in defeat, while Bushnell and first-year forward Katie Chisholm (Rutland, VT) each added 11 points. Conn.'s record now stands at 1-17 overall and 0-7 in NESCAC play, with their lone win coming at Smith College on December 8.

Amherst has just two games remaining on its regular-season slate, traveling to play NESCAC rivals Bowdoin and Colby Colleges on Friday and Saturday.
