Senior quad-captain Hallison Putnam netted 13 points in defeat
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Amherst College women's basketball team dropped its conference-opener at NESCAC rival Williams College, 62-54 on Friday night despite 14 points from sophomore sharpshooter Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) and 13 points by senior quad-captain Hallison Putnam (Lexington, KY). The Jeffs were whistled for 22 fouls on the night, while Williams was called for just 14, offsetting Amherst's 40-28 rebounding advantage.

The Jeffs (8-6/0-1 NESCAC) trailed for the first 11:35 before Walker put the visitors up 13-12 with her second bucket of the evening. Williams (10-4/1-0 NESCAC) rebounded with a jumper by junior Kate Stumpo (Walpole, MA) and never trailed again, although they blew an 11-point lead in the second half. Amherst used an 11-0 second half run to cut the gap, capped by a mid-range jumper by sophomore guard LaShauna Barboza (New Bedford, MA) that tied the score at 40-40 with 8:05 remaining. Not to be outdone, Williams regained its composure, and command of the game, with a pair of three-point plays by junior power forward Abi Jackson (Jamaica Plain, MA) and two spot-up jumpers by first-year Kerri McMahon (Denville, NJ).

McMahon led three Williams players in double figures with a game-high 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Jackson followed suit with 14 points, followed by Stumpo with 10.

Sophomore forward Sarah Bergman (Shaftsbury, VT) paced the Jeffs on the boards with a game-high 14 rebounds.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. against visiting NESCAC rival Middlebury College.
