Jeffs Take Second Place at Little Three Tournament

February 9, 2002

First-year Brian Lawrence posted a 3-0 win in the Jeffs' victory over Wesleyan
AMHERST, MA - The 13th-ranked Amherst College men's squash team opened the 2002 Little Three Tournament with a decisive 9-0 win over 19th-ranked Wesleyan University on Saturday. But, the Jeffs couldn't hang on to their momentum for the afternoon match against Williams College, dropping what turned out to be the Little Three title match to the fifth-ranked Ephs, 8-1.

The Jeffs came out firing on all cylinders against the Cardinals, recording 3-0 shutouts from six of the nine slots. Following a 3-1 victory from first-year standout Michael Strong (Wayne, PA), junior Carlo Valdesolo (Andover, MA) played to a 3-0 win from the second slot. First-year Gifford Sommerkamp (Bethesda, MD) and junior John Holodnak (Wellesley, MA) followed suit from the third and fourth positions, respectively. Junior David Bauer (Darien, CT) and senior John Brody (Baltimore, MD) came away with 3-2 wins, and the trio of sophomore Asad Haque (Richmond Hill, Ontario), first-year Brian Lawrence (Concord, MA), and sophomore Andrew Merle (Lynnfield, MA) finished the rout with 3-0 takedowns from the seventh, eighth, and ninth positions.

The tables were turned, however, when the Amherst nine took the court against Williams. Seven Jeffs were shut out, with the only Amherst win coming off of Bauer's 3-1 performance against Williams sophomore Dan Bishop.

In other tournament action, Williams beat Wesleyan to take the Little Three title. The Jeffs will finish out their regular season next Saturday at Yale University.
