Jeffs Down MIT, Fall to Trinity

January 23, 2002

Amherst senior John Brody posted one of five shutout victories against MIT
AMHERST, MA - The 14th-ranked Amherst College men's squash team snapped a four-match losing streak with a 7-2 win over visiting M.I.T. on Wednesday, before falling to the top-ranked team in the nation, Trinity College, later that evening.

M.I.T. presented a challenge at the top of the draw, handing the Jeffs' No. 1 and 2 seeds a pair of early losses. Amherst rebounded by sweeping the rest of the matches, however, with five of their seven victories coming by way of shutout. Senior John Brody (Baltimore, MD), juniors John Holodnak (Wellesley, MA) and David Bauer (Darien, CT), sophomore Asad Haque (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and first-year phenom Brian Lawrence (Concord, MA) each posted 3-0 wins for Amherst, while first-year Gifford Sommerkamp (Bethesda, MD) posted a hard-fought 3-2 victory and sophomore Andrew Merle (Lynnfield, MA) added a 3-1 win.

Trinity (5-0) posed a more formidable challenge in the nightcap. The Bantams, who boast a whopping seven players in the NISRA Top-20, surrendered just one game in nine matches en route to a shutout win. Lawrence was the lone Amherst player to steal a game from Trinity, falling to first-year Taylor Robinson (Concord, NH), 3-1.

Amherst (4-5) returns to action this Friday and Saturday at Franklin & Marshall.
